Description
Leith Hall is a quadrangular, harled mansion built in several phases. The north block is a three-story and attic rectangular tower house with angle turrets, dating from the mid-17th century. Mid-18th century two-story angle pavilions flank the north block. The east block was originally constructed in the mid-18th century as a two-story entrance front containing the principal rooms, but was rebuilt to three stories with a piend roof and dentilled cornice around 1799-1800. The south block was built in 1797 on the site of the old kitchen, also three stories, with dummy turrets to match those on the north block. The south front has three windows with tripartite windows on the left and right, featuring flush-pedimented Venetian windows on the first floor. The west block, constructed in 1868 on the site of the former courtyard wall, is two stories and attic, incorporating some 17th-century features. A porch was added to the east in 1900 and roundels to the west in 1906, also incorporating some 17th-century dressed stonework. The west block was likely designed by A. & W. Reid and Melvin of Elgin, who advertised for contractors for additions to Leith Hall in the Huntly Express in February 1875, possibly including corridors at the rear of the south wing. The building is a National Trust property and is part of a group value context.
