Description
Craigievar Castle is a five-to-seven-storey tower house of stepped L-plan design, begun by the Mortimers in the early 17th century and completed by William Forbes in 1626. The upper parts of the castle feature elaborate detailing, including two-storey angle turrets. The re-entrant tower is corbelled, and the east tower has balustraded flat roofs with ogee capped stair turrets. The exterior is harled.
The ground floor is vaulted. The first-floor hall has a groin vault with plaster surface decoration and original screens passage. Moulded plaster ceilings are present almost throughout the castle. The west wall of the barmkin remains, with remnants of a brewhouse at the north end and a conical-roofed tower at the south end.
The castle was re-roofed in 1826, when repairs were carried out by John Smith of Aberdeen. These repairs included alterations and raising of the towers, as well as a new entrance door, which has subsequently been restored.
