Description
Home Farm Bothy is a rare example of an early to mid 19th century single-storey, three-bay, L-plan vernacular cottage. It was extended to the rear before 1899 and is located at the edge of the later Home Farm, opposite Grieve's House. The building is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, featuring large ashlar quoins.
The entrance elevation faces west and is symmetrical, with a central two-leaf boarded timber storm door, flanked by windows in the outer bays and a small cast iron rooflight. There is an additional window in a slightly lower set-back bay to the north and a door located in the re-entrant angle of the rear (east) elevation.
The windows are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the roof is covered with graded grey slates. The gables to the south and west have coped ashlar stacks with thackstanes.
Inside, the cottage retains simple stone fireplaces with decorative horseshoe grates in the north and south gables, and the rear room also has a fireplace opening. The timber framing around the front door suggests the presence of a small lobby, and the loft features timber pegged joints.
