Description

The monument is an obelisk constructed of rock-faced courses, topped with a ball finial, standing on a tall, inscribed base. It was erected to commemorate Colonel Alexander Shand of Templeland, who died in 1803. The inscription records his military career, noting he began his service in the Royal Artillery as a private, fought at Corbach and the Brandywine River, and rose to the rank of full colonel. Further details were reported in the Press and Journal on November 14th, 1964.
