Description
Kilnhillock Farm Steading is an early 19th-century substantial U-plan steading range featuring a free-standing rectangular stable block at its center. The building is constructed from coursed rubble with contrasting tooled grey granite dressings.
The U-plan range includes a wide south-facing five-bay center block with a rear wing that once housed threshing machinery powered by a water wheel, which has since been removed. The center has a segmental-headed entrance flanked by a single window on each side, with pedestrian doorways located in the outer bays. There are seven regular loft vents positioned below the eaves.
On either side of the center block, there are five single-storey segmental-headed arched bays, with return wings that contain byres, which have been altered on the east side.
The stable block is a long rectangular single-storey structure with a loft that also includes a forge-workshop and accommodation for farm workers. The roofs are covered with slate, likely sourced from Aberdeenshire.
