Description

Blairs College is a building constructed between 1898 and 1902 by architects Ellis and Wilson, featuring a U-plan layout with additions made in 1906 and later. The structure is mainly three storeys high with a basement, built from granite ashlar and adorned with moulded string courses and a cill band at the first floor. It has a boldly battered and rusticated rough-hewn plinth. The main northern elevation showcases an impressive entrance tower with a crown steeple that projects off-centre. The entrance porch at ground level features an arched and domed carved keystone with shields above the main arch, and an elaborate panelled and glazed arched inner doorpiece. The top stage of the tower includes an open arched belfry supported by domed piers, topped with a crown and an open cupola featuring an elaborate copper finial.

The northeast elevation is austere, with a crowstep-gabled three-bay shallow projection to the left of the tower, which has shouldered-headed ground floor windows. The wallhead gablets to the right are asymmetrically arranged and also crowstepped. The two wings at the rear form the U-plan, enclosing a plain courtyard with arched ground floor windows and a projecting corridor. The east elevation, which includes a 1906 addition styled similarly to the southwest range of the U-plan, is plain and features two additional east-west wings. The northwest wing, which comprises the final six bays of the northern elevation, has a canted western end and a centre gable with a two-storey canted window. The southwest wing is simpler and includes modern additions.

Inside, the dining room in the eastern range has a coffered ceiling. A small chamber above the porch has been converted into a chapel. The panelled hall includes a stair hall to the right. On the first floor of the eastern range, there is a large galleried library featuring three-quarter height wainscot, a balustraded gallery, and a ribbed, compartmentalised timber ceiling. The building also houses a historically important collection of ecclesiastical garments, plate, and a picture collection, which are displayed in a collections room on the ground floor of the eastern range, featuring wainscoting and gothic fitted cabinets and wardrobes.
