Description

New Chapel at Blairs College is a transitional Gothic hall church designed by architect Robert Curran of Warrington, with the foundation stone laid in 1899 and an elaborate interior completed by C.J. Menart between 1910 and 1911. The building features a tower with three-stage buttresses and a slender masonry spire at the northeast angle, along with an apse at the west end, which is liturgically oriented to the east. It is constructed from grey Rubislaw granite with pink sandstone tracery. The entrance is located at the base of the tower on the northeast side, featuring a canopied niche above, a two-light belfry stage, a crenellated parapet with angle finials, and lucarnes to the spire, including a set of diminutive upper lucarnes and a delicate iron weather-vane. The apse windows are adorned with elaborate cusped geometric tracery, and the building has a crenellated parapet with angle pinnacles and a facetted roof, all topped with a polychrome banded slate roof made of blue-grey and purple slates with red ridge tiles.

Inside, the chapel boasts very elaborate marble work throughout, especially in the chancel and sacristy, above carved timber stalls, all crafted by Menart. The south side features eight windows with three cusped lights each, while the north side has five windows, in addition to the transept. There is a single window in the chancel that continues from the nave, along with three windows in the apse. A large six-light east window, which is liturgically oriented to the west, contains clear glass. The altar is covered by a baldacchino, and the altar table has been brought forward. The apse windows showcase good stained glass depicting mainly Scottish saints. The interior also features a braced barrel vaulted roof that is lined with timber.
