Description
Crimonmogate House is a large, early 19th-century Neo-Greek house, built around 1825 by Archibald Simpson. The house is constructed of ashlar granite, with a prominent two-storey main block, and a lower, single-storey central section to the south front. This central section features an advanced hexastyle portico with unfluted Doric columns and a pediment; the returns to the antae are very short, and the portico is flanked by advanced single-bay wings. The east front has seven windows, with the centre three bays bowed. The roof is slate.
Around 1860, a roof and a dining room addition were made to the house. The interior is exceptionally fine, highlighted by a cube-shaped central hall. This hall features Apollo Didyma-style anta capitals, a coffered ceiling, and a central dome. The other interior rooms are simply but distinctively decorated.
Floor plans, believed to be drawn by Simpson, have been found, although the set is incomplete. There are also unsigned and undated floor plans for the circa 1860 additions.
