Description
The Town Hall in Strichen, designed by John Smith in 1816, is a mixed Tudor and Classical building with a rectangular plan, featuring a tower reminiscent of 16th century Scottish Tolbooths. It is constructed from finely-wrought granite ashlar. The main block is gabled and two stories high, with four windows set in a round-arched arcade on the ground floor and three hood-moulded windows above, topped by a castellated parapet.
To the east, there is a four-stage tower with segmental-headed openings and broad-chamfered embrasures on the ground floor of the south and east elevations. The tower features hood-moulds with decorative carved stone faces, and a clock at the third stage with stepped hood-moulding. The parapet is corbelled and crenellated, with corbelled angle-turrets. The stone spire has an octagonal base with pointed windows and a crenellated parapet, along with an additional band of crenellation at the midpoint of the steeple. The belfry houses a bell from 1818 made by Thomas Mears. The timber sash and case windows have multi-pane glazing.
