Description
Coull House is a villa designed by Marshall Mackenzie between 1912 and 1914. It is a two-storey building with an attic, featuring a five-bay rectangular plan in a stripped Palladian style. The central core consists of three bays, flanked by advanced outer bays that have piended roofs. The exterior is finished in harled granite, with a base course and plain margins around the openings.
The south elevation, which is the principal front, has a five-bay layout with a central door and regular window arrangement in the flanking bays and upper storey. Above the upper storey windows, there are inset stone plaques. A single-storey colonnade in front of the central bays features circular granite piers supporting a flat roof. The outer bays are slightly advanced and include large semicircular-arched windows on the upper storey, each with cast-iron balconies. To the right, there is a two-storey, two-bay addition that is plain but matches the main style.
The north elevation was not seen during the 2002 inspection. The east side has two-storey and single-storey outhouses and later additions that adjoin the rear, with an irregular window arrangement. The west elevation was also not seen in 2002.
The windows are 8-pane timber-framed casements, and there are small gabled roof dormers. The roof is covered with grey slates and has lead flashing, with ridge stacks present.
Inside, the building was repartitioned into flats in the 1970s, except for the large entrance lobby at the center. Restoration work was ongoing at the time of the 2002 listing.
