Description
St Devenick Suspension Bridge is a footbridge built between 1836 and 1837 by the Aberdeen architect John Smith. It features tall, rounded, and tapered ashlar pylons on both the north and south sides, each supporting two cast iron Greek Doric columns with lintels that hold the suspension cables. The bridge has masonry abutments on both the north and south banks; however, due to the widening of the river, the southern abutments are now located on an island in the middle of the river. The iron suspension cables include some bar-link chains. The bridge decking was removed in 1984, and the bridge is no longer in use.
