Description
This is a two-storey and attic, five-bay former church building, constructed in 1887-88 by R G Wilson of Ellis & Wilson. It was later converted into flats in 1973 by Malcolm Allan, Housebuilders. The building's design incorporates classical and Egyptian-inspired detailing. The exterior is primarily of tooled coursed granite ashlar with finely finished dressings on the north and east elevations, while the remaining sides are of coursed granite rubble. A dark grey, rough-faced granite forms the base course, with additional cill and dividing band courses, and an eaves blocking course.
The east (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with prominent pedimented central bays. A detailed pedimented doorpiece is centrally positioned on the ground floor, featuring columns and pilasters with stylized capitals supporting a dentil-moulded cornice and balustraded parapet, topped by a pediment. Stone steps, now with modern railings, lead to a replacement glazed timber door and fanlight. The ground and first floors have decorative panelled dividing band courses. The first floor features an elaborate, pilastered tripartite window in the centre, surmounted by a deeply architraved half-roundel, with architraved and pedimented windows on either side. A frieze of blind oculi sits below the pediment, while a blind colonnade exists beneath it, flanked by pilastered pediments and a central roundel with acroteria. Blind architraved openings are present on the ground floor, and the upper floors are pilastered with blind architraved oculi above, projecting cills, and scrolled wallhead detailing.
The north elevation is asymmetrical, with nine bays. The first floor is pilastered, and the fenestration is regular for six bays to the left, with windows infilled below the cills at the first floor and tooled lintels. Eaves cornices, a blocking course, and a stepped-up attic floor above the bay to the outer left, featuring a scrolled pediment, are also present. The mansard roof to the attic has modern rooflights. To the right are three broad pilastered bays with a ground-floor doorway, with regular fenestration completing the remainder.
The west elevation is nearly symmetrical with near-regular fenestration.
The south elevation is also asymmetrical, with two bays advancing to the outer left. Regular fenestration exists on the ground and first floors. A mansard roof with regularly placed rooflights covers six central bays of the attic floor. Large windows are present on the ground and first floors of the bay to the outer right, with a stepped-up attic window centrally positioned and a scrolled pediment above.
Modern timber windows are incorporated throughout. The roof is a replacement mansard slate roof with lead ridges. The interior of the building was not inspected in 2001. Square-plan gatepiers flank Union Grove, possessing corniced necks and stylised Ionic pilaster caps. Low granite boundary walls, surmounted by modern railings, run alongside and retain a car park on Holburn Street.
