Description
A pair of semi-detached villas, built circa 1886 by Pirie and Clyne, forming numbers 94 and 94A Hamilton Place, Aberdeen. The buildings are two storeys and an attic, showcasing Egyptian-Greek detailing. They are constructed of rough-faced pink granite with predominantly grey granite dressings, with a finely finished appearance to the margins. A dark grey granite base course runs along the bottom, and a cill course sits above the ground floor windows. The main entrance doors are panelled timber, with fanlights featuring a letterbox design, and are flanked by squat, rough-faced pilasters below the lintels. Further detailing includes a finely finished dividing band course, a ground floor cill course, a cill course on the first floor, and a band course at impost level, as well as a parapet between the gables of the principal elevation.
The south-facing principal elevation is symmetrical, composed of two mirrored, semi-detached villas, each with two bays. The doorways are in the centre bays of the ground floor, flanked by pilasters. The doors are deep-set and include glazed panels. Gableted windows break the parapet above the first floor, each framed by deep entablatures with squat pilasters. Blind tablets are positioned centrally, and blind cartouches sit within the gablets. Bowed windows are present on the ground floor of the outer flanking bays, forming a balcony at the first floor. Above these are tripartite windows, corniced with consoles and surmounted by pairs of scrolls, with pilastered mullions. The attic floors are pedimented, with grey granite finials breaking the pitch and scrolled ends. Bull’s-eye windows are centred within the attics, flanked by naval and stylised sunflower paterae set in the gableheads, and surmounted by a stone finial.
The north-east elevation has a gabled, two-storey addition to the outer right. The north-west elevation was not observed in 2000, and the south-west elevation is gabled.
The windows are predominantly timber sash and case windows with two panes. Corniced gablehead and ridge stacks feature circular cans. The roof is grey slate with lead ridge detailing, with stone skews and cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not inspected in 2000.
The low, rough-faced pink granite boundary walls, constructed in an Aberdeen bond with grey granite snecking and coping, extend to the south, shared with numbers 90-92 and 98 Hamilton Place (listed separately). Gatepiers are present to the left and right of the property, with grey granite shafts rising from a plinth, a rough-faced pink granite neck, and a scrolled cap. Rubble dividing walls create the boundaries to the east and west.
