82 Hamilton Place With Gate Piers And Boundary Walls, Aberdeen

This is a pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1886 by Pirie and Clyne, located at 84 Hamilton Place, Aberdeen. They exhibit Egyptian-Greek detailing and are of group value.

The properties are constructed of rough-faced grey granite with finely finished margins. A dark grey granite base course and ground floor cill course are present, along with a parapet between the pediments of the principal elevation. The symmetrical south (principal) elevation comprises two mirrored, semi-detached villas, each with four bays. The ground floor features round-arched doorways in the centre bays, having scrolled horseshoe surrounds with keystone details surmounted by stylised anthemion motifs. Modern doors are present at No. 82 and 82A, with a single door flanked by glazed panels at No. 84. Above are single windows, followed by deep entablatures that break the parapet, resting on squat pilasters, with a pair of naval paterae at the centre of each and further stylised anthemion motifs. Flanking bays to the left and right feature windows with bowed architraves, with oversized decorative pilasters supporting a three-light oriel window to the centre of the first floor, featuring stylised Ionic capitals to the mullions. The roofs are steeply pitched and hipped, constructed of stone. The attic floor is pedimented, flanked by deep scrolls and incorporating tripartite windows. Each window's centre pane contains a stone roundel enclosing a shell motif, with an anthemion adorning the apex of the pediment. Wallhead stacks flank the pediments on the inside. A gabled northeast elevation is present, while the northwest elevation was not inspected in 2000. The southwest elevation is also gabled and features a ground floor addition to the left.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with two panes. Corniced gablehead and wallhead stacks are complemented by circular cans. The roof is covered in grey slate with a lead ridge. Stone skews and cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Internally, No. 82 retains some mouldings, including a fireplace possibly influenced by Voysey. No. 82A was not inspected in 2000. No. 84 features a bull's-eye window flanking the inner doorway, with a moulded surround featuring sunflower paterae. The staircase through the ground, first, and attic floors has distinctively turned balusters. Remaining mouldings and doors are also present, along with elongated colonnettes at the angles of the canted windows.

The low boundary walls constructed of rough-faced pink granite Aberdeen bond with grey granite snecking and coping are situated to the south. Gatepiers shared with Nos. 78-80 and Nos. 86-88 Hamilton Place (listed separately) are constructed with a grey granite shaft swept up from a plinth, with a rough-faced pink granite neck surmounted by a scrolled cap. Rubble dividing walls extend to the east and west.
