90 Hamilton Place With Gate Piers And Boundary Walls, Aberdeen

This is a pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1886 by Pirie and Clyne, located at 92 Hamilton Place, Aberdeen. The buildings exhibit Egypto-Greek detailing and are set within a boundary wall and have gate piers.

The villas are two storeys and an attic, presenting a symmetrical appearance from the southeast (principal) elevation. They are constructed of rough-faced pink granite, with dressings of predominantly grey granite, finely finished to the margins. A dark grey granite base course, ground floor cill course, and a finely finished dividing band course are notable features. The ground floor doorways have pilastered panels with letterbox fanlights; they are flanked by glazed panels. Single gableted windows break the parapet above the first floor, featuring deep entablatures and squat pilasters, with a blind tablet in the centre and stylised sunflower paterae. Architraved windows with keystone details frame the flanking bays, with oversized decorative pilasters supporting a three-light oriel window above the centre of the first floor. The roofs are steeply pitched and piended, covered in grey slate with lead ridges and stone skews. Attic floors are pedimented, with grey granite finials and scrolled ends, and incorporate bull's-eye windows and sunflower paterae in the gableheads. A modern skylight is present on the attic of the left-hand villa.

The northeast elevation features a single-storey addition to the outer right at ground floor. The northwest elevation showcases a broad canted window to the ground floor of number 90. The southwest elevation has a window in the centre of the first floor and an addition to the left on the ground floor.

The villas feature predominantly two-pane timber sash and case windows. Chimneys have corniced gableheads and ridge stacks with circular cans. Internally, both properties retain good original features. Number 90 has fine timber fireplaces to the ground floor rooms, a moulded cornice with sunflower paterae to the principal ground floor room, and decoratively scrolled brackets over the hall. Similar features are found in number 92, with the addition of etched glazed panes to the inner door and a timber stair with distinctively turned balusters.

The boundary walls are low, constructed of rough-faced pink granite in an Aberdeen bond, with grey granite snecking and coping. Gate piers, shared with the neighbouring properties at numbers 86-88 and 94-96 Hamilton Place (listed separately), have grey granite shafts rising from a plinth, topped with a scrolled cap. Rubble dividing walls extend to the east and west.
