Description

Dated 1904, 1, 3, and 5 Desswood Place are a two-story and attic, three-bay, rectangular-plan freestyle terrace with shops at ground floor, accompanied by a rectangular-plan ancillary structure to the rear. The building is constructed of coursed grey granite ashlar, with the ancillary structure exhibiting tooled ashlar and finely finished margins. Projecting cills are present on the north elevation, while chamfered cills are found on the east. An eaves course runs along the building.

The north elevation (facing Desswood Place) is asymmetrical. Large plate-glass shop windows are visible on the ground floor, featuring vertically glazed upper panes. A panelled timber door with a three-pane fanlight is located on the outer right, flanked by a recessed doorway to another shop. A segmental-arched window with a keystone detail is centrally positioned on the first floor. A decorative wallhead stack breaks the eaves above, enclosed by two buttresses corbelled out on decorative brackets that break the roofline with splayed capitals. Bipartite windows are located in the flanking bays to the right, and a piended roof features a decorative iron finial. A panelled two-leaf timber door with a curved glass fanlight is situated on the ground floor of the angle towards the outer left. A hexagonal turret is recessed in the angle of the first and attic floors, featuring three-light windows on each level, and topped with a hexagonal spire and oversized finial.

The west elevation is gabled, with an opening off-centre to the right of the ground floor, and a stair window centrally positioned above. The south elevation's ground floor is obscured, with irregular fenestration on the first floor and two canted dormers on the attic floor.

The east elevation (facing Whitehall Road) is also asymmetrical, featuring two gabled bays with large plate-glass shop windows on the ground floor, mirroring the north elevation’s style. A tripartite window is located to the left of the first floor, flanked to the right by a single window. A semi-circular tablet with a keystone detail is centred in the gablehead, displaying a monogram flanked by "19 04". The ancillary structure, located at 3 Whitehall Road, adjoins to the left. It possesses a broad segmental-arched doorway with a keystone detail, featuring a two-leaf modern timber door with a fanlight, the centre plane slightly advanced. A curvilinear blocking course sweeps upwards to form a simple parapet. A single buttress breaks the eaves with a splayed capital to the outer left.

The windows are predominantly two-pane timber sash and case, with decorative geometric upper panes. The roof is covered in grey slate with a lead ridge, piended to 3 Whitehall Road. Coped stone skews feature simple skewputts. Corniced wallhead and gablehead stacks are topped with circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present. The interior was not inspected in 2000. Boundary walls of coped granite rubble, incorporating a modern garage door, adjoin 3 Whitehall Place to the outer left. A coped rubble wall with a square-plan gatepier is located to the west.
