Description
This is a substantial, 30-bay terrace of twelve 2-bay and two 3-bay cottages, known as 51 Carden Terrace, situated in Aberdeen. Nos 31-37 were completed by 1864, with the remainder of the terrace constructed in the later 19th century, primarily around 1881 by architects Mackenzie and McMillan, with George Hall acting as builder for No 47 in 1876. The terrace is built of finely finished, tooled coursed granite ashlar, with a prominent base course, long and short quoins, an eaves course, and cornices to the doorways and windows supported by consoles. Many doorways have pilastred surrounds with fretwork timber lintels and letterbox fanlights, while the ground floor windows have panelled aprons. Some cottages have panelled, two-leaf doors. The roofs are slate with lead ridges, and the chimneys feature corniced gableheads with circular and octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
The northwest (principal) elevation shows that Nos 31, 35-53 are 2-bay cottages with a doorway flanked by a single window on the principal floor. Nos 33 and 55 are 3-bay, with the doorway centrally positioned on the principal floor, flanked by single windows to either side. No 2 Prince Arthur Street, which faces onto Carden Place, is a 2-bay cottage with a window in each bay. Dormers are predominantly canted and largely original, though some are later additions. No 33 has a central skylight, and No 55 features a bipartite rectangular dormer.
The southwest elevation displays a pair of round-arched windows centred in the gablehead, complete with a keystone. The southeast elevation is irregular, with predominantly two dormers to the attic floor of each cottage, and some later additions and alterations. The northeast (Prince Arthur Street) elevation of No 2 is symmetrical, with three bays; the doorway is centred on the ground floor, flanked by single windows, and there are three round-arched windows in the gablehead. No 4 is also 3-bay, with the doorway to the left of the ground floor, flanked by two windows, and two dormers above. A boundary wall adjoins the outer left side of No 4.
The majority of the cottages feature 4-pane timber sash and case windows, though No 51 has plate glass, and No 55 has 2-pane windows. Some dormer windows have modern glazing. The boundary walls are low granite, some surmounted by railings; rubble coped walls are situated to the south.
