Description
Granton Lodge, located at 8-14 Great Western Place in Aberdeen, dates from around 1830 with additions made by Cameron & Matthews in 1894. This two-storey and basement Classical villa, designed in the style of Archibald Simpson, features predominantly droved yellow sandstone ashlar, with granite rubble on the east elevation. The half-sunken basement is rendered and includes a base course. The principal floor windows are corniced with consoles and have panelled aprons, while the first-floor windows have projecting cills.
On the west elevation facing Great Western Place, the building is near-symmetrical with a nearly regular arrangement of windows on the basement floor. The central bay is advanced and features a glazed and panelled doorway flanked by single windows on either side. The first floor has regular fenestration, with an infilled window in the right bay and a window above it. The left bay also has regular fenestration.
The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, is symmetrical and consists of three bays. The central bay has an architraved doorway corniced with consoles, featuring a panelled two-leaf timber door flanked by brass lamps and an etched letterbox fanlight with marginal glazing. The remaining bays have regular fenestration on both the principal and first floors.
The east elevation is also near-symmetrical with three bays, including a slightly advanced gabled central bay and regular fenestration. There is a harled addition on the right, while the remainder of the elevation is blank.
The north elevation is near-symmetrical with five bays, showcasing a variety of blind and glazed windows arranged regularly.
The building features a variety of timber sash and case windows, although the basement floor has replacement windows. The roof is piended and platformed with slate, featuring lead ridges and coped ridge stacks with octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
Inside, the property has been remodelled to form flats, but some original features remain, including panelled timber doors and shutters with a key motif on the principal floor, as well as unusual curved doors off the entrance hall. The plasterwork is simple.
The boundary walls consist of rendered low coped walls to the south of the house, with square-plan piers topped by spherical finials. There is a low retaining wall to the west, which is surmounted by iron railings, while the remainder of the boundary is enclosed by high rubble walls.
