Description

Nellfield Cemetery Lodge, built in 1881 by James Souttar, serves as an entrance building to Nellfield Cemetery. It is a single-storey building with an attic, featuring Scots Baronial detailing. The lodge is constructed of finely finished, tooled, coursed grey granite ashlar, with Aberdeen bond ashlar to the rear. The design incorporates a base course, segmental-arched openings with chamfered reveals, crowstepped gables, spherical stone finials to the gable apexes, and curved angles corbelled-out below the eaves.

The west (principal) elevation is asymmetrical, with a three-bay layout. A gabled bay is advanced on the right side, featuring a three-light canted window on the ground floor beneath a piended slate roof with iron brattishing. A narrow arrowslit is placed in the gablehead. An open porch is located in the re-entrant angle to the left, housing a panelled timber door with a letterbox fanlight. A circular tower rises from the square-plan porch, also showcasing arrowslit openings and a deep eaves course, culminating in a conical roof with three lucarnes and an iron weathervane to the apex. A single window is positioned to the outer left, with a modern rooflight above the attic.

The south elevation is also asymmetrical, with a three-bay arrangement. A narrow, gabled bay is centered, featuring a ground-floor window and an arrowslit in the gablehead. A single window is located to the left and a modern rooflight above the attic floor. A gabled bay is advanced to the right, with a flat-arched window on the ground floor and a broad round-arched window above, featuring a hoodmould. A window is also incorporated into the left return. The east elevation is largely obscured by a later 20th-century building. The north elevation is near-symmetrical, with a single bay featuring a five-light rectangular-plan window on the ground floor, a piended roof with iron brattishing, and an arrowslit opening in the gablehead.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, with leaded glass upper sashes in the canted window of the west elevation. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead ridges. Stone skews feature moulded skewputts. A corniced ridge stack with circular cans and a coped wallhead stack are also present, along with cast-iron rainwater goods. The interior was not inspected in 2001.

The cemetery is enclosed by high granite rubble walls. Square-plan ashlar gatepiers, topped with spherical finials, stand at the lodge. Low quadrant walls sweep in towards iron gates. Square-plan gatepiers with pyramidal caps and iron gates are located in the centre of the wall on Great Western Road.
