Description
St Joseph's School, located at 3 Queen's Road in Aberdeen, dates from around 1880. This two-storey, three-bay villa was originally detached and features a rectangular plan. It is constructed from tooled, coursed grey granite, with a rough-faced basement and granite rubble on the southeast elevation. The building has a base course, panelled aprons, a dividing band course, an eaves course, and overhanging eaves supported by brackets.
The northwest elevation is symmetrical, with a central doorway on the ground floor that has a cornice with consoles. Steps lead to a former door that has been converted into a window, with a letterbox fanlight above. There are canted windows in the flanking bays on the ground floor, and a single window in the centre of the first floor, flanked by bipartite windows on either side.
The southwest elevation is obscured by a link to 5 Queen's Road, designed by W J Devlin in 1923. The southeast elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a central doorway on the ground floor with irregular fenestration. There are two tripartite rectangular dormers in the attic floor, with a skylight between them. The northeast elevation is obscured by a link to 1 Queen's Road, also designed by W J Devlin in 1923.
The building predominantly has 2-pane and 4-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is piended with grey slate and lead ridges, and the original stacks have been removed. It features cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, many mouldings, architraves, and panelled timber doors remain. The principal room on the ground floor has a particularly fine cornice and a panelled window surround. The staircase is preserved, featuring decorative iron balusters.
