Description
This is a two-story, basement and attic double villa, likely dating to around 1880 and possibly designed by John Rust. Later additions and alterations have been made. The building has six bays and incorporates Jacobean detailing.
The exterior is constructed from tooled, coursed grey granite, with a finely finished appearance to the southeast elevation. The remainder of the building is built with Aberdeen bond granite rubble. Key external details include a base course, projecting cills, a dividing string course, eaves course, and chamfered quoins on the northwest elevation.
The principal, southeast elevation is symmetrical, mirroring a pair of three-bay villas. A sunken basement is present. The ground and first floors of the central two bays feature regular fenestration. Doorways are located on the ground floor of the penultimate bays to the left and right, each with panelled timber doors, letterbox fanlights above, and a single window above. Blind tablets are positioned between the first-floor windows of each villa, with a curvilinear gabled window breaking the eaves at attic level, topped by stone finials. Advanced bays extend to the outer left and right, each with kneelered gables and a piend-roofed canted bay extending through the ground and first floors. Bipartite windows with crowstepped pediments are set within each gablehead.
The northeast elevation is gabled, with a single window off-centre to the right of the first floor. The northwest elevation is largely obscured by modern blocks adjoining the sides. Regular fenestration flanks each of these modern additions, and the wallhead steps up to the centre of each at attic level, with a window centrally placed and flanked by dormers.
The southwest elevation is also gabled, with a doorway centrally positioned on the ground floor, two windows above, and a single window centred in the gablehead.
The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with lead ridges, featuring coped skews, with blocked skewputts and decoratively profiled skewputts to the southeast elevation. Corniced gablehead and ridge stacks have octagonal cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
Interior features of 2 Queen's Road include surviving cornices. At 4 Queen's Road, elements such as a staircase with iron balusters, scrolled brackets, some panelled doors, architraves, cornices and some friezes remain.
The property is fronted by square-plan ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps, which are shared with adjacent properties. A low coped granite wall connects the gatepiers, and granite coped rubble walls extend to the remainder of the boundaries.
