Description
The building is the Library located in the Quadrangle of King's College in Old Aberdeen, constructed between 1825 and 1914. The west frontage, designed by John Smith, features a two-storey ashlar structure in the Tudor Gothic style, complete with an archway leading to the quadrangle. The south and east sides of the quadrangle and the Library were designed by Robert Matheson between 1860 and 1873, with later additions by W.W. Robertson in 1881, and further work by A. Marshall Mackenzie in 1894 and 1914. The bookstack was completed by Alex Cruickshank in 1943.
The Ivy Tower, a 17th-century feature, is a four-storey circular structure built of rubble, partially enclosed by Mathieson's buildings. The Cromwell Tower, which began construction in 1657, was reconstructed by John Smith in 1825-1826. This tower is a rectangular, four to five-storey building (originally six storeys, with ceilings raised) topped with battlements and built of rubble.
Inside, there is a Henry Scougall panel. Elphinstone Hall and classrooms were designed by A. Marshall Mackenzie and Son (with A.G.R. Mackenzie) between 1927 and 1929, with alterations and additions by G. Bennet Mitchell in 1956. This section features a one to two-storey late Scots Gothic ashlar design with a cloister feature. A wing connecting Elphinstone Hall and the Library, also designed by G. Bennet Mitchell in 1952, is a two-storey ashlar structure in a simple late medieval style.
