Description
This is a plain, unremarkable single-storey brick-built store with a Belfast Truss roof, likely dating from around 1920. It serves as a store for a local shop and is situated on the east side of Hill Street, to the west of the centre of Ardglass. The building measures roughly 10.6 metres by 10 metres. The front, or west-facing, gabled elevation features a large, off-centre flat-arched vehicle entrance with a timber double-door and wicket gate. To the right of this entrance is a roughly square window that has been blocked up. The longer south elevation contains two windows, now boarded up and largely as originally constructed. The store is adjoined to the north by a separate building. The rear elevation is not visible, but interior evidence suggests it originally had two windows, one of which is now boarded up. The roof is covered with felt and is curved, characteristic of a Belfast Truss design.
The Belfast truss, developed in the mid-19th century, was designed to provide efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofs, meeting the demands of the industrial revolution. While the term "Belfast truss" is widely applied, it specifically refers to timber bowstring trusses where the internal bracing members connect on the top curved member. This building was surveyed as part of a wider study of Belfast Roof Trusses. The structure exhibits industrial archaeological interest.
