Description
This is a well-preserved and relatively uncommon vernacular terraced building, likely dating to before 1834 and originally containing a shop. Located on the northeast edge of Castlewellan, it forms the middle and end of a three-house, two-storey terrace built on the steep slope of Mill Hill. Number 65 has a small, roughly constructed shop front with an undersized wooden signboard. Above the shop window is a small timber sliding sash window with 2 over 2 panes, set on a stone sill considerably wider than the window itself. The southwest gable is plain and smoothly rendered. A roughly constructed sliding sash window with 3 over 2 panes is visible on the rear southeast elevation, along with a 2-paned casement window on the ground floor. There is no rear door to number 65. Behind a small, enclosed farmyard are two dilapidated outhouses. The front and side facades are finished with smooth render, while the rear is whitewashed rubble. The roof is slated with Bangor Blue slates and features four evenly spaced chimney pots. The gable chimney pots are original, while the central ones are recently constructed, rendered and have concrete copings. Buildings are depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834. The building retains vernacular characteristics and exhibits good quality and survival of its interior.
