Description
This is a well-preserved and uncommon vernacular terraced house, likely dating to before 1834, with a construction period estimated between 1820 and 1839. Located on the northeastern edge of Castlewellan, numbers 65 and 67 Mill Hill form the middle and end of a three-house, two-story terrace built on a steep hillside.
The front, or northwest-facing elevation of number 67 features a large, fixed multi-pane window to the left of the ground floor. Directly to the right of this window is evidence of a former arched doorway which has since been blocked. To the right of the blocked doorway is a modern, panelled door with a small fanlight above. Further to the right is a small, sliding sash window with six-over-six panes, set on a stone sill. The first-floor level has matching sliding sash and case windows, slightly larger in size. All windows are timber-framed. The southwest gable is blank, while the northeast gable is partially obscured by the adjacent building at number 69 and is otherwise blank.
At the rear of number 67 are several small, lean-to extensions. One is attached to the left side and is constructed of concrete block; the one to the right, which abuts the first, has a smooth render finish. Both rear extensions have corrugated iron roofs. A dilapidated greenhouse, with partially missing glass, is located behind the left-hand lean-to. Attached to the rear of the right-hand lean-to is a small outside toilet. The first floor rear elevation features a fixed window with eight panes to the left and a modern two-pane window with a top opener to the right. A small, enclosed farmyard at the rear contains two dilapidated outhouses.
The front and side façades are finished with smooth render, while the rear is white-washed rubble. The roof is covered in Bangor Blue slates and features four evenly spaced chimney pots. The chimney pots on the gable ends are original, while those in the middle are recently constructed, rendered, and have concrete copings. Buildings are depicted on this site on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834.
