Description
The building at 3 Corry’s Square, Newry, is a three-storey house constructed in the early 1860s. It is situated on the north side of Corry’s Square, to the right of a pair of similar houses.
The house has an artificial slated roof with four modern vents to the front slope and modern plastic rainwater goods; there are no external chimneys. The south-facing façade is rendered with a raised, chamfered basecourse and string courses between the ground and first floors, and first and second floors. A vertical raised render band marks the corner where it joins the adjacent property. The main entrance, on the right-hand side of the ground floor, features a modern, four-panelled timber door, with the top two panels containing leaded glass; a plain glazed transom overlight is above. A modern, single 1/1 sliding sash window is located to the left of the ground floor entrance. Similar windows are present on the upper floors, with those at the top floor being slightly shorter. The east gable abuts the adjoining building at number 2, and the left gable shares a party wall with the neighbouring house at number 4. The north-facing rear elevation is rendered with modern smooth cement render. A modern 1/1 top-hung timber window is situated between the first and second floors on the left side of this elevation; a smaller, similar window is on the right side of the second floor, both with thin concrete cills.
The house was constructed alongside the adjacent properties, including those on the opposite corner, coinciding with the development of Maginnis Street. While not depicted on the 1861 Ordnance Survey map, it is documented in the 1865 valuation revision book, confirming its construction in the early 1860s. Most original features have since been lost, and as a result, the building has little historic or architectural interest.
