Description
This is a house located on Corry’s Square, Newry, built in the early 1860s alongside the adjacent properties and those on Maginnis Street. It was not depicted on the 1861 Ordnance Survey map, but is referenced in the 1865 Valuation revision book.
The building has an artificial slated, pitched roof with a hip to the left-hand side and a gable shared with the adjacent property. The roof features four modern vents along the front slope, and has semicircular plastic rainwater goods, but lacks chimneys. The south-facing elevation is finished with cement render, featuring a raised chamfered basecourse and stepped render quoins to the left corner. String courses mark the division between the ground and first floors, and between the first and second. The main entrance is on the ground floor, consisting of a modern, four-panelled timber door, with the top two panels being leaded glass, and a plain glazed overlight transom. To the right of the entrance is a modern, single 1/1 sliding sash window with a render cill. Similar windows are present on each upper floor, with those on the upper floor being slightly reduced in height.
The left-hand gable, which faces Maginnis Street, is cement rendered and has no openings; its base course steps up the slope towards the rear. A high wall continues to the left and includes a small, modern wrought iron gate, which provides the only access to the rear of the property. The right-hand gable is a party wall shared with the adjacent property (number 3). The rear (north) elevation is modern smooth cement render and was not inspected in detail. A modern 1/1 top-hung timber window is situated between the first and second floors toward the right of the elevation, while a smaller, similar window is located to the second floor’s left side, both with thin concrete cills. The majority of original features have been lost, and the building has limited architectural or historic interest.
