Description

This is a small, single-storey, lean-to gardener’s bothy located within the walled garden of the Finnebrogue estate, approximately two miles north of Downpatrick. It was likely built between 1834 and 1858, with the style typical of the 1840s. The building has group value with the other listed buildings on the estate.

The front, northeast-facing elevation features a pointed arch doorway with a timber door to the left, and a similar, now unused, door to the right, separated by two pointed arch window openings with "gothick" sash frames, each containing eight panes over six. Above these windows are three small, roundel-like windows with geometric tracery and frames. The left, or eastern, edge of the wall is curved. The southeast elevation has two short, high-level, pointed arch windows set within “gothick” frames, with a small recess above them mirroring the shape of the upper windows on the front elevation. The façade is harled and painted, and the pitched roof is slated, with a slight overhang. A small, rendered chimneystack is situated on the southeast corner, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.

The walled garden itself dates back to 1802, but this bothy is a later addition. It remained in use until the mid-20th century, but was largely abandoned by the 1980s, before undergoing restoration in the late 1990s. Documentation relating to the building can be found in the Perceval-Maxwell Papers at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), alongside Ordnance Survey maps from 1834, 1858, and circa 1901, and valuation records dating from 1864 to 1929.
