Description
The summer house at Finnebrogue estate, located off Finnebrogue Road in Finnabrogue, County Down, likely dates to around 1802. It is a small, single-storey, canted building situated against the south wall of the Finnebrogue estate walled garden, approximately a third of a mile northeast of Finnebrogue House and two miles north of Downpatrick.
The building has a distinctive five-sided, canted plan. Three "front" faces, each oriented southwest, feature large semicircular-headed openings, one of which originally served as the doorway. The facade is rendered over brick, though it is now heavily overgrown with vegetation. The roof has completely disappeared.
The surrounding walled garden dates from 1802, and the summer house is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834, supporting a construction date around 1802. It originally overlooked a partly wooded pleasure garden. The building appears to have been abandoned in the 1960s, with the former garden now densely overgrown.
The summer house possesses group value in relation to other listed buildings on the estate and has the potential to be restored to contribute to the character of the walled garden. Records from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) document the building's history through various maps, valuation records, and the Perceval-Maxwell Papers. It is currently derelict.
