Entrance gates at Finnebrogue House, next to 9 Finnebrogue Road, Finnabrogue, Downpatrick, Co Down

The entrance gates to Finnebrogue House estate, situated next to 9 Finnebrogue Road in Finnabrogue, Co. Down, date to around 1885. This decorative gate screen, composed of square sandstone pillars and low sandstone walls, incorporates late Victorian iron gates and railings. The screen is positioned on the north side of Finnebrogue Road, angled to the road, approximately a mile north of Downpatrick. It includes a large vehicle gate flanked by tall square, light-coloured sandstone pillars adorned with friezes and pyramidal caps topped with ball finials. Smaller pillars of a similar style are positioned between short stretches of low sandstone walling, which supports decorative iron railings matching the gates. Thick shrubbery partially obscures the screen to the east, while to the west it joins a rubble wall. The gateway appears on an Ordnance Survey map from around 1901 but not on the 1858 map, suggesting construction in the mid-1880s, possibly coinciding with the gate lodge. Prior to this time, the estate entrance was located slightly to the west; remnants of the original entrance, featuring stone pillars likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, are visible behind the gate lodge. The site holds group value alongside other listed buildings on the Finnebrogue House estate.
