St Bline's Well, Ballintemple Road, Newry, Co Armagh

Located on a prominent, east-facing grassy slope of Slieve Gullion, St Bline’s Well is an unusual monument of local interest. Accessed by a footpath from a laneway north of Killevy Church, it occupies a spectacular setting. A white-painted concrete shrine has been built over the well, which is itself defined by granite slabs on either side. The shrine is divided into three sections at the front by slender, fluted timber columns with flat caps. The central column is slightly higher and topped by a white cross, supporting a figurine of the Virgin Mary. Inscribed on the top of the central section is "Deus Meus et [??]nia." Painted on the base are the dates "AD 43BC" (on the left), "1929" (on the right), and "Tobar Naoim Oiachaio" (across the bottom). A flight of concrete-flagged steps provides access to the shrine. A smaller, second well is present part-way up the left side. Immediately south of the shrine is a small, painted concrete cross set into a concrete base, inscribed with "IHS”. Immediately north stands a thorn tree decorated with pieces of cloth. The site was first depicted on the 1906-07 Ordnance Survey map and likely dates to the religious revivalism around 1900.
