Description
Two two-storey houses, numbers 14 and 16 Greencastle Street in Kilkeel, Newry, were built between 1820 and 1839 and have since been converted into a single shop. They stand on the north side of Greencastle Street within a row of buildings. Number 16 is three bays wide, while number 14 is two bays wide. The houses have pitched roofs covered in natural slate, with clay ridge tiles and tiled verges. Two cement-rendered chimneys are visible, one on the left gable and the other on the party wall between the properties. Ogee metal rainwater goods are present, with a downpipe on the right side of the facade. Two dormers have been added to the facade, one on each house; the dormer on number 14 is located on the left and the one on number 16 is centrally placed. These dormers have very shallow segmental roofs and cheeks made of painted sheeted timber, each with three rectangular lights which have been covered with painted boards. The street-facing facade is rendered in smooth cement and features stepped raised render quoins. A square-headed coachway is at ground level on the left side of number 16, currently covered by a roller shutter. The remainder of the ground floor facade across both properties is occupied by a modern, large, aluminium-framed shop window with five equal panels; four are glazed and the left panel contains a pair of doors. Above the window is a large plastic box fascia displaying “Dunnes Stores”. Five equally spaced windows are located on the first floor—three on number 16 and two on number 14. These are modern top-hung casement windows with 1/1 glazing and painted granite cills. Both gables adjoin the adjacent properties. The rear elevation is partially obscured by a large modern shed that fronts onto an alleyway. The remainder of the rear elevation is smooth rendered with small, modern, two-paned casement windows. A house existed at this location on the 1834 town map and in valuation records. Although marked as a post office on the 1860 town map, valuations dating from 1862 to 1929 (and likely beyond) describe the premises as a house. The valuation of 1862 recorded dimensions of 14 yards by 8.5 yards and 2.5 storeys. A 1970 survey noted that the dormers originally had small glazing panes, that all windows were sliding sashes, and that the coachway had a segmental head.
