1 John Mitchel Place, Newry, Co Down, BT34 2BP

This is a three-storey, two-bay house located on John Mitchel Place in Newry, situated between the Presbyterian Church and the cinema. Constructed between 1900 and 1919, it was built at the same time as the nearby Foresters’ Hall. The house is characterized by an asbestos cement slate roof with a skylight, and a cornice with incorporated gutters and a downpipe on the street facade. The walls are line-rendered with cill courses at the first and second floors. A granite step leads to the main entrance, which has a six-panel timber door with a plain transom light, flanked by raised rendered jambs with scrolled brackets supporting a reproduction entablature. A single 1/1 sliding sash window with a plain architrave and granite cill is at ground floor level. Matching architraved windows are positioned at first and second floor levels, aligned with each other but not with the ground floor openings. The front of the building is enclosed by railings resting on a chamfered granite plinth. The house was first recorded in the 1908 valuation revision book. It is located within the Ballynacraig townland and, while situated in a Conservation Area, is not considered for individual listing due to extensive alterations.
