Description
This is a three-storey building with an attic, constructed of granite rubble and likely dating from the period 1820 to 1839. The building fronts directly onto the east side of John Mitchel Place within the designated conservation area, which provides a level of protection.
The building has a steep, natural slate gabled roof with two traditional cast iron roof lights facing the street and one on the rear pitch. A large, cement-rendered chimney with twelve pots is located on the left gable, and a stump on the right gable. An ogee granite cornice with a lead-flashed parapet gutter (with a rendered fascia) runs along the front. The walls are of granite rubble, laid in courses and incorporating some snecking; the ground floor wall of the street façade is smooth rendered.
A semi-elliptical arch with rendered jambs and head, incorporating imposts and a raised keystone, is located on the right side of the ground floor. The right jamb is shared with an adjoining coach arch. A modern door with cilled sidelights and a plain elliptical transom sits within the archway. To the left of the archway is a modern door with a plain rectangular transom light. Between these two doors are two 1/1 top-opening windows with granite cills. The first floor features four equally spaced 1/1 sliding sash windows, each with a three-piece keystoned lintel and granite cill. Identical, although smaller, windows are placed directly above, each with flat timber heads. All upper floor windows have exposed sash boxes, which are almost flush with the external walls. The window frames are currently in poor condition, and the openings are infilled internally with concrete blocks. The rear wall is rendered and painted.
The upper floors are four windows wide, with stairwell landing lights in the second opening from the left. A 6/6 sliding sash landing light is located between the ground and first floors, and another between the first and second floors. A 6/3 sash window is situated between the second floor and the attic floor. The room windows on the rear elevation are 6/6 sliding sash at the first floor level and 6/3 at the second floor level. All rear windows have exposed boxes and granite cills. Both gables are abutted by buildings on either side.
The building was shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and was occupied by Hugh Kidd at that time. In 1863, it was described as being three and a quarter storeys high.
