Kilbroney Gate Lodge, 79 Kilbroney Road, Rostrevor, Co.Down

This dwelling served as the gate lodge for Kilbroney House. It first appeared on an Ordnance Survey map from 1860, labeled as “Gate Lodge,” suggesting a date contemporary with Kilbroney House, which was likely constructed in the early to mid-1840s. Kilbroney House is believed to have been designed by the Newry architect Thomas Duff, and the gate lodge may also be his work. The original layout, as shown on the 1860 map, was L-shaped, indicating that the two-story rear projection was not part of the original design; however, this later addition is harmonious with the rest of the building and there is no evidence to suggest it was added at a different time. A single-story rear extension dates from the mid-20th century. The gate lodge was recorded in the 1861 valuation roll but was not formally listed until 1892, when John Coffey was documented as the occupant. Subsequent occupants included John Camfield (1895), Peter McCumiskey (1898), and various others throughout the early 20th century, including a general labourer, Peter McCumiskey, his wife Rose, and three daughters living in a "2nd class" dwelling with only two rooms "in use" in the 1901 census. By 1911, four rooms were noted as being in use. The property remained under the same ownership as Kilbroney House until it was sold as a separate property in 1978. The lodge's history is intertwined with that of Kilbroney House (reference HB16/06/011).
