Description

St Colman's Church of Ireland church is a small, rectangular, gabled building constructed in 1927 to designs by Henry Seaver. It is situated on the south side of Tullybrannigan Road, approximately half a mile west of Newcastle town centre, and is set within a well-maintained graveyard established in the later 19th century. The church was originally intended as a chapel of ease.

The building is in an early medieval Irish style with slight Neo-Romanesque elements and possesses a picturesque quality. It is constructed of uncoursed granite rubble with a green Westmoreland slate roof. The west-facing front gable features a relatively small, semicircular arched entrance with a recessed panelled timber double door. Above the door is a small roundel window. The north and south facades are similar, each with four relatively small semicircular headed windows. The east gable has a slightly larger, centrally located window, and a semicircular headed doorway on the left, with a black painted door matching the front entrance. The roof has a projecting overhang with plain barge boards. A small bellcote is located on the front gable. Cast iron window frames are present.

A low rubble wall, built with granite coping and wrought iron railings featuring spearheads, runs north of the church. Decorative and simple wrought iron gates are set between square, coursed granite gate posts topped with pyramidal caps, and similar posts mark the eastern and western boundaries of the wall. The church, boundary walls, gates, and railings are included in this listing.
