Description
4 Bayview Park is a two-storey, two-bay L-shaped semi-detached house (not a pair) situated on the north side of Bayview Park in Kilkeel. Built in 1882 as part of a planned housing estate of 12 dwellings designed and constructed by John Orr, a local entrepreneur and developer, the house was originally named Helen's Villa along with its neighbouring property.
The building has a pitched natural slate roof with a two-storey return to the rear. The main roof features a single cement rendered and coped chimney to the right gable and a cast iron skylight to the rear pitch. Semicircular cast iron rainwater goods with matching downpipe are fitted throughout. The walls are painted lined render with projecting render quoins to the right of the front elevation, and all windows have granite cills.
The front elevation is dominated by a single-storey flat roof porch at the left end, its roof concealed behind a parapet with painted rendered walls. The porch front contains recessed plaster piers flanking a central 2/2 sash window, with a broad render band at window head level that wraps around the corners. A second projecting band runs above this on all three sides of the porch. The parapet features five indented diamond shapes to the facade with three to each cheek, and is stone coped. The left cheek has a fixed three-pane window with semicircular head, whilst the right cheek has a modern painted timber door with glazed pane and brass bell pull. To the right of the porch at ground floor are two 1/1 sliding sash windows, with three similar equally spaced windows at first floor level.
The left gable of the main block forms a party wall with the adjacent property and is rendered blank on the right gable. The rear elevation features a two-storey return abutting to the left, whilst the remaining wall is cement rendered with a single 2/2 sliding sash window to each floor. The return has a hipped roof where it joins the main roof, becoming gabled to the rear, with a cement rendered chimney rising from its rear gable and two cast iron two-pane skylights. The left cheek of the return has four 2/2 sliding sash windows (two to each floor), whilst the gable end has two 2/2 windows on the right pitch of the gable (one ground, one first floor). The right cheek contains a single 2/2 sash window to each floor at the right end, with a door to the centre leading into a single-storey lean-to porch with corrugated asbestos roof.
Although it retains its original character and has an unusual plan form, being the last in Bayview to do so, this building possesses no special architectural merit.
