Well opposite 87 Cranfield Point Lane, Cranfield, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34

A well, likely dating from between 1840 and 1859, is located on the spring line at the base of a seaward cliff near Cranfield Point Lane in Cranfield, Kilkeel, Newry. This well-preserved structure is of industrial archaeological interest. Built into a sandbank just above the beach, the small building is constructed of random rubble stone. The front, or southwest-facing, elevation is the width of a door, with side walls forming jambs. The doorway is centered and features a granite threshold and a split Silurian stone lintel. Sidewalls are partially incorporated into the bank. The roof is flat, sloping towards the rear, and constructed of flat stone slabs with a segmental concrete coping. The rear of the semicircular stone roof is embedded within the bank. The well is marked on Ordnance Survey maps from 1980.
