Bridge, Dree Hill Road, Finnis, Dromara, Dromore, Co Down, BT25

This is a twin-arched masonry road bridge, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, carrying Dree Hill Road over the River Lagan at its junction with the Dromara Road in the hamlet of Finnis. The bridge is constructed of random rubble blackstone, with the arch voussoirs and parapet copings finished in roughly dressed granite. Concrete underpins the abutments and pier; the pier has an angled cutwater at its upstream (south) end, rising to parapet level. The two segmental arches vary in length, the western one being longer to accommodate the road’s bend. The bridge deck has a slight curve and provides two lanes for traffic and a footpath. The bed of the river beneath and downstream from the bridge has been concreted, with a low concrete wall on the downstream side directing water flow. A waterfall and fish pass are located downstream of the concrete work, and field drain pipes discharge into the river immediately upstream. The bridge appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1833; it was not specifically mentioned in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs. Ownership is by central government.
