Description
This is a twin-arch rubble masonry bridge, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, carrying the Dromara-Rathfriland road over the River Lagan. Constructed of random rubble blackstone, the bridge features angled cutwaters at each end of the piers, rising to the arch crown level. The arches are of a segmental profile, built with split stone voussoirs, with the arch on the right bank being wider and higher than the one on the left. The parapets are coped with split stones laid on end, with repairs to the northeast ends of both parapets following traffic collisions. The bridge deck is humped and incorporates both curved and straight sections, with dogleg approaches. Timber beams are laid across the upstream arches to prevent cattle from accessing the space underneath.
A concrete laneway runs upstream along the right bank, and an island is located in the river on the northwest downstream side. The bridge is flanked by houses along the roadside at both ends, but is otherwise surrounded by fields.
The bridge, known as 'Bell's Bridge', is labeled on Ordnance Survey maps dating back to 1834 and in subsequent editions. It is considered to have industrial archaeological interest and represents the development of infrastructure in the district, remaining a good example of its type in its original setting and condition with only minor alterations.
