Description

This is a late 18th/early 19th century three-span arch bridge constructed of random rubble masonry, carrying the Banbridge Road over the River Lagan at the west end of Dromara. The bridge has a plainly detailed design without any cutwaters. The arches are segmental in profile, featuring roughly dressed voussoirs; the central arch is wider and slightly higher than the flanking arches, creating a minor curve in the road surface. A metal pipe affixed by brackets runs across the upstream (western) face of the bridge, which detracts from the overall character. The deck supports a two-lane road, and a large drainage pipe discharges into the river immediately upstream on the southern bank. The bridge is shown on the 1833 Ordnance Survey six-inch map and subsequent editions, suggesting a construction date in the late 1700s or early 1800s. While possessing some industrial archaeological interest, it is not considered suitable for listing, given the presence of better-preserved examples in the locality.
