Description
This is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay gate lodge situated on Cabra Road, Rathfriland, and originally serving the eastern entrance to Cabra House (listed as HB16/07/031A). The building was erected between 1840 and 1859 and is shown on the 1859 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map.
The architectural style has been altered by modernisation, but retains a basic form. The roof is hipped and covered with natural slate, with overhanging bracketed eaves. It features semicircular plastic rainwater goods and modern wet-dashed and painted walls, with a smooth cement-rendered basecourse. The front elevation, facing south, is divided into three bays by full-height segmental headed wall recesses. The main entrance is located in the central bay, with a modern glazed plywood door. The remaining bays at ground and first floor each contain a single window, all of which are modern timber casements with a transom, fixed side light and painted granite cills.
The left elevation continues as the return of a two-storey rear section. A modern window is present on the ground floor return, and another on the first floor of the main block, both with concrete cills. The rear elevation is abutted to the right by a two-storey return and to the left by a small single-storey return. The blank wall at first floor left is notable. The two-storey return has a pitched natural slate roof integrated with the main roof, overhanging eaves without brackets, and a plain bargeboard. This section’s walls are consistent with the front elevation, and its windows are similar but with thin concrete cills. The single-storey return has a flat felted roof and walls similar to the main block, including a modern door and a single modern window on the rear wall. Its right side abuts the two-storey return, and its left side is flush with the right elevation of the main block. The right elevation of the main block is one bay wide and has a segmental headed wall recess containing a modern window on each floor.
A cast iron boundary post marks the boundary to the south of the house, and the original fence has been removed. To the southeast are the gates and screen, which were previously described alongside the lodge. The lodge was previously listed but was delisted on 28 March 2003.
