Description
This is a single-storey, barrel-vaulted hall of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, constructed c.1948, and located in a field facing a quiet rural road in the townland of Gortatray, near Stewartstown, Dungannon. The building exemplifies "barn technology" in its construction. It possesses a mildly Art Deco façade, which is described as lending a naïve architectural pretension.
The hall is rectangular in plan and segmental in section, built from corrugated iron on a rendered concrete plinth. The walls and roof are unified by the barrel vaulted form. The front, or South, elevation features a stepped Art Deco design, with a central square-headed door opening containing a tongue and groove timber door, flanked by buttresses. Either side of the door are square-headed window openings, currently boarded up. A small, raised rectangular panel is positioned above the door, though the inscription is now illegible. The East and West elevations are corrugated iron, curving upwards from the rendered plinth to form a smooth arc roofline, with a metal-framed dormer opening on each side. Short piers are spaced along the plinth. The rear, or North, elevation is a blank concrete infill that completes the cross-section of the hall. There are no rainwater goods. The hall sits within a field bounded by thick hedges. The ground level rises towards the back of the building, almost obscuring the plinth.
A date stone on the building indicates a construction date of 1948. It is noted that the hall does not appear in contemporary valuation records.
