Description
This is a World War I and II memorial, built around 1924 in Stewartstown, County Tyrone. Monuments of this type and modest scale are characteristic of market towns across Ulster and are valued for their social record, setting, memorial value, and simple architectural qualities. The memorial is a typical stone obelisk, constructed from granite, and sits within the town square, surrounded by a low railing fence.
The monument consists of a tapered obelisk standing on a pedestal, which in turn sits on a wider square base. The pedestal is composed of a double plinth, a tapered dado, and a projecting cornice. A weathered bronze wreath, in low relief, is positioned on the southern face of the obelisk, indicating the front. Bronze lettering on the southern face of the plinth displays the dates "1914-1918." Below this, on the southern face of the dado, is a list of names, ranks, and companies of those who fell during that period, also rendered in applied bronze lettering and filling the face. The list continues on the eastern face of the dado, with the dates "1939-1945" appearing below; this list only occupies half the face. The northern and western faces of the monument are blank.
The surrounding fence is made of painted steel railings with spear-topped tops. The spikes at the top are cast in a fleur-de-lis motif with diamond sections bisected by a cross. The railings show evidence of impact damage, particularly on the western side with several buckled rails. The base of the monument is encircled by memorial wreaths of poppies. The setting consists of a town square with a parking area, covered in square concrete paving slabs, and protected by a kerb, bollards, and the railings. The square is a long, rectangular space aligned on a north-south axis and is bordered by predominantly two-storey buildings, a mix of domestic and commercial properties, many of which appear to have been modernised or rebuilt. Originally, plans were made to build a memorial hall, similar to that in Coagh, but insufficient funds led to the erection of this obelisk instead.
