Description
Lakeview House is a well-proportioned detached manse built around 1855, located to the rear of Stewartstown First Presbyterian Church in the townland of Parker's Farm. The building shares group value with the adjacent church. Although well maintained, replacement uPVC windows detract somewhat from its appearance. The house occupies an elevated site with rural views to the rear overlooking a small lake approximately 200 metres to the east, and an urban setting to the front.
The building is constructed as a rectangular two-storey structure with roughcast render external walls. A single-storey gabled central entrance porch projects from the front east elevation, flanked by three window openings. The porch features a window to the front east elevation and a replacement uPVC doorway to the side south. All windows to the porch and front elevation are square-headed with replacement uPVC windows set on cut-stone sills. The side south elevation contains two window openings, also with replacement uPVC. The rear west elevation is partially obscured by returns and has no visible openings. The roof is hipped with natural slate to the main roof and artificial slate to the porch, featuring overhanging eaves and two simple yellow brick chimneys to the apex. Rainwater goods are cast-iron.
A two-storey return extends to the rear west elevation with an assortment of square-headed and round-headed windows and a square-headed door to the north elevation. Its pitched and slated roof is covered with artificial slate. A further single-storey flat-roofed return extends to the southwest.
Two outbuildings stand to the rear. A two-storey structure to the rear west has an irregular arrangement of square-headed openings to ground and first floors, with replacement uPVC windows. An external staircase to the east elevation leads to a doorway at first floor level. This outbuilding has a pitched roof with natural slate and replacement uPVC rainwater goods. A single-storey outbuilding to the northwest features a large square-headed timber-sheeted garage door to the gable end with no other visible openings and a pitched roof.
The manse is accessed via a long driveway from Hillhead Road, located to the south of Parker's Farm and positioned to the rear of the church which fronts onto Hillhead Road.
The building first appears on the 1906 Ordnance Survey town plan and is first recorded in the valuation books in 1912, when Reverend James Donaldson was in residence. It was subsequently occupied by Reverend McIlveen (a Church of Ireland Minister) until approximately 1979, followed by Reverend Boswell until approximately 1997. The front porch appears to have been added later in the building's history, possibly resulting in the loss of an original doorcase.
The adjacent lake is historically significant as the reputed last hiding place of 'Red' Hugh O'Neill prior to the Flight of the Earls.
