Description
Evishessan Bridge is a mid to late 19th-century road bridge of rustic character, built of rubble stone with regular cut-stone capping to the road. The bridge spans the Broughderg River and is situated on a roughly north-south axis, approximately 8 metres wide. It is located to the northwest of Cookstown, within the rural setting of Evishessan/Beagh More, surrounded by open marshy countryside.
The bridge features four segmental-headed arches, two of which are submerged in the river to accommodate flood conditions, while the other two span the river bank. Cut stone dressings are present on the arches, with smooth render on the arch soffits. Splayed cut stone cutwaters are located between the northern arches, and splayed smooth capping is also present.
The bridge does not appear on an Ordnance Survey map from 1853, but is shown on a 1906 map. The construction date is uncertain but is likely around 1860. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest, notable for its style, proportions, plan form, and structural system within its preserved rural setting. It holds local historical interest.
