Description

This is a detached single-storey farm building of circa 1870, located at Gortagammon Road, Tullahoge. It is a well-preserved and extremely rare example of a small nineteenth-century rustic building that combines several minor functions: a piggery, byre, and stable under one roof.

The building is long and rectangular in plan, divided into three distinctive bays that share a common building line but have their own pitched roofs of natural slate. The three bays step down in height following the slope of the field, creating a distinctive stepped profile when viewed from the roadside. All rainwater goods are cast iron. The external walls are rendered rubble stone with brick dressings to some openings.

The front north elevation faces onto the field and comprises the three bays stepping down in height with the slope. Each bay has a round-headed door opening with brick voussoirs and surrounds. The side east and west elevations are gable-ended with no openings. The roadside east elevation is partially covered in foliage. The rear south elevation has an irregular assortment of square-headed windows and door openings; some windows have been removed. The central door opening has brick surrounds and an extended timber lintel.

The building is simply but robustly detailed. Some rear openings have been enlarged, but otherwise it remains in original condition.

The building is set perpendicular to the main Gortagammon Road, located in fields with the roadside gable set on the verge. Although an OS map of 1833-34 shows a building occupying part of this site, it does not appear on the revised OS map of 1854-57. The present structure appears on the second edition OS map of 1905 and undoubtedly belonged to a house located just to the north, which dated from around 1870. That accompanying house was demolished circa 1990.
