Description
This is a late Georgian road bridge, dating from approximately 1830, built over the Killymoon River near Cookstown, County Tyrone. The bridge is a well-proportioned and elegant structure, notable for its unusually wide single span. Constructed of squared random rubble stone walls with cut-stone capping, it features a single round-headed arch with cut-stone voussoirs and coursed rubble to the soffit. The road has a width of approximately 10 metres. The bridge’s setting is rural and unspoiled, with a staggered road layout creating clear views of the arch. The western bank of the river is overgrown, while the eastern side features an open grass area. The bridge spans the Killymoon River, situated south of Cookstown, with the road crossing the river at a right angle. It likely follows the route of a previous bridge, as evidenced by its depiction on an Ordnance Survey map from 1833-34 labelled "New Bridge." Subsequent Ordnance Survey maps refer to it as "Tullywiggan Bridge." The bridge is of both industrial archaeological and local historical interest. While alterations exist that detract somewhat from the original character, it retains notable architectural style and proportion.
