Description
4 Circular Road is a semi-detached house erected in 1832 by the Drapers Company. Designed by William John Booth and built by Mager for £775, it was constructed between 1830 and 1832 as part of a deliberate initiative to improve the appearance of Moneymore village. The house forms part of a fine example of early village planning, standing alongside its neighbour and another similar pair beyond the Second Presbyterian Church, all demonstrating the Company's commitment to providing better-class dwellings.
The building is constructed of ashlar sandstone with a severe but impressive classical design. It presents a three-bay front to Circular Road, where it stands well set back with an avenue approach and modern metal gates and posts. The westerly-facing elevation is dominated by a pedimented gable with an ashlar-faced projecting entrance porch. Three steps ascend to a recessed framed and panelled door with upper glazed panels. The porch parapet is constructed of ashlar sandstone, returning along its flanking wall before meeting the roughcast-rendered two-storey back return. A cast iron trunkhead and downpipe drain the porch roof.
The pedimented gable features fine ashlar sandstone throughout, including the tympanum. The pediment itself is moulded timber with a generous overhang that continues around both the front and rear of the main block. Above the porch and centred on the gable is a nine-pane double-hung sliding sash window at first-floor level, with a semi-circular-headed thirteen-pane double-hung sliding sash window set directly above within the pediment.
The front elevation comprises two bays with tall vertical windows divided horizontally into three panes; the centre one opens. Above these are shorter windows of two panes arranged horizontally, with the upper pane top-hung. All front-facing walls are ashlar-faced. An ogee metal gutter returns along the bottom member of the gable pediment, with a downpipe draining to the porch roof.
The two-storey roughcast-rendered back return is unpainted. The roof is finished with natural slates and features a single chimney stack shared with the neighbouring property, No. 6.
When completed, the house was occupied by the Church of Ireland curate. The extended back returns visible on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map were likely added after completion. Apart from these extensions and alterations to window divides following bomb damage, little change has occurred to the gable and front façade. The building lies within a conservation area and remains in residential use.
