Description
Garramean is an Edwardian house, likely dating from around 1900, that has been significantly extended to the rear. It is situated in Moneymore, County Londonderry, and retains good grounds, original avenues, and entrance gates from approximately 1900.
The original part of the house is a three-bay, two-storey building with gabled slate roofs and a long rear return. The west-facing entrance elevation is symmetrical, featuring a centrally positioned framed and panelled door with pilasters, scrolls above, and a plain fanlight. Small cant bays flank the entrance, each with four-pane double-hung sliding sash windows with horizontal divisions. A lean-to roof extends over the bays, creating a canopy over the entrance. At the first floor, three eight-pane double-hung sliding sash windows are centrally positioned above the ground floor openings. There is a generous roof overhang supported by paired modillions, and the gable features a pair of supporting modillions. The walls are finished with a white roughcast and have a plinth. The roof is covered in natural slates, with gable chimney stacks topped with four tall, moulded chimney pots. The north gable has a single, vertically-oriented double-hung sliding sash window on each floor, while the south gable features two symmetrically arranged, vertically-oriented eight-pane double-hung sliding sash windows on each floor.
A long, two-storey return, constructed around 1990, extends to the south, featuring extensive modelling. This extension includes a flurry of vertical windows, paired dormers, a projecting canted staircase bay with stepped window cills, and culminates in a glazed sun room offering views of the enclosed tennis court. The gutter lines vary, and the roofs are natural slated. The extension’s walls are finished with grey roughcast, and while sympathetic in appearance to the original house, it is more than twice its size.
The house is set back from Circular Road and features a well-maintained garden, neat outbuildings, a double avenue, and entrance gates with cast iron, faceted pillars. The house first appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1906, showing a shorter return. Previous owners included Hartley and Dickson, and actor Rex Harrison resided there for a period.
